Sunday April 10, 2011

Hudson,
Today, we had your 3rd birthday party at our home. The theme was "Hudson's Little Masters Party." It's Master's Sunday, the biggest Sunday in golf. We wanted to make it fun for Dad's and parents in parents in genral, so we coupled your birthday with a big sports event - cool, huh? Well, we thought so!

The theme was Daddy's idea and mommy loved it and got to work on it. I got an original Master's pin flag off of Ebay. These are not easy to get because Augusta does not sell them. We hung it on the front door. I had little golf balls made that said "Happy 3rd Birthday Hudson!" We got dozens of yellow and green balloons. The party favors were little yellow buckets that contained one yellow golf ball and an egg with chocolate inside. I also got a golf themed pinata, but we did not end up breaking it open. It seemed like a pinata, a bat and 3-year-old toddlers was not a good idea. You were already riled up. I guess I will save the pinata for another time. Maybe I will bring it to Colorado this summer. We also got a big bounce house for the backyard so that kids would stay off the trampoline. This did not work! What were we thinking? Like toddlers listen! All the kids had a blast and you loved every minute of it. You ran all over the place and a had a ball. There was one problem: Cash. Cash is my friend Melissa's oldest son. He is almost 6 and he is very rambunctious. You think he's hung the moon and I am not sure why. You spent the entire time following him and I was not very happy about this, because he makes bad decisions. You really like older kids, which is why we chose a Montessori. If you are going to be influenced by older children, I want them to be well-behaved and kind. I had to pull you aside towards the end and tell you that I was not happy about the decisions Cash was making.

I am going to tell you again so that you will read all of this in the future. I want you to stamp it all in your mind. You, my love, have your own brain. You make decisions based on what you know is right, not based on what other people are doing. Trust yourself and your instincts. You choose the road less traveled by, you will be much better off, much happier and have much more self worth. Hudson, do the right thing. Mommy and Daddy are teaching you good values, good morals and we want you to keep them forever and use them when you need to choose between right and wrong. Choose right. If you do make a decision or a make a mistake, it is OK, pick yourself up, remember your roots, and start over. You are a leader, not a follower, and if you do choose to follow at moments in your life, follow a good person, not a bad person who makes the wrong decisions.

Your cake was very special. You had been telling Miss Elizabeth and Miss Maria that you were going to have a dinosaur cake so Mommy had one made. Yes, you are still obsessed with dinosaurs and you are in a roaring phase, which I will not miss. The cake had huge T-Rex playing golf. It was so precious! I got it a few hours before the party and you wanted to keep looking at it. You kept your hands off though (wasn't easy) - good self control. You were very excited about the cake and it was so sweet, but when we finally cut it, you ate one bite and said, "I want the jelly beans." You are a trip! I have never seen you pass up cake. Daddy had gotten jelly beans for the party and you just couldn't stop asking for them. You get on one thing and that's it. You have a one track mind at times. You ate way too many!

...And now, the best moment of the party by a long shot and it has to do with your beloved Ella, who could not be there, because as we know, she lives in Annapolis, Maryland now. So, we bring the cake outside, everyone is sitting around I am trying to light the candles. It was windy and Mamma was having a hard time. I finally got them lit, and Reese, a precious little girl who is in your class at school, came up behind you and blew them out. She was excited and only trying to help. Daddy and I weren't sure if you were going to go nuts or keep it together. I was praying for the latter, but waiting on pins and needles. You let out a, "No! I wanted to blow them out and make a wish," with a wine. So, I lit the candles again and you took a breath, closed your eyes, and said, "I wish for Ella," and blew them out. I want to cry just writing that line. I will never forget it. Every parent in there just thought it was the sweetest thing. Some did not know who Ella was, and asked, "What did he say?" I said, "he wished for this sweet little girl who he is in love with." Reese's mom said, "He wasn't going to let that wish go. He needed that wish!" Oh Hudson, you did. It was like you had to blow them out to wish for Ella. To this day, you have never wished for anything at the fountain besides Ella. You truly love her and the connection that you two have is something very special. I called Anni and told her the story and she emailed me back and said it made her cry. She wrote: "OMG Rhonda, that is soo cute it made me cry! I feel so bad we put all this distance between them while they have such a precious and very special friendship. They really do love each other. I was waiting until I got a change to video tape it, but Ella has been singing this song a couple times this week. It is from one of our kindermusik CD's Shoo fly, don't bother me... so we usually sing it like this... Shoo fly don't bother me, shoo fly don't bother me, shoo fly don't bother me 'cause I belong to my Karli. This week Ella has been singing it with Hudson. She's been singeing Shoo fly don't bother me 'cause I belong to my HUDSON!!! Can you believe this. I was waiting to video tape it but of course as soon as she see me with the camera or my phone she gets all shy and stops singing!"

Happy birthday my love, my amore, my heart, my soul, my breath. I cannot believe you are 3. It is bittersweet for me. It has gone by so fast and you will always always be my baby, my Hudson. Mommy and Daddy love you so very much and we are so proud of you. You are such a good boy.

Love, Mamma

2011 Master's winner: Charl Schwartzel, a 26 year old South African. Schwartzel won exactly 50 years after Gary Player became the first International Masters champion. Tiger Woods was tied for 4th place with a -10. Rory McIlroy, 21 years-old lost a 4 shot lead and shot 80, but your Dad and I both think that you will hear Rory's name a lot in your life time (your Daddy wrote that line).
